NESBITT’S TREASURER CANDIDACY ENDORSED BY FORMER TREASURER ROSS

NEWS RELEASE

February 24, 2010

Former Nebraska State Treasurer Ron Ross today announced his support for Tom Nesbitt for state treasurer.

He said, “The reason I am supporting Tom is pretty simple. Tom Nesbitt is the only candidate for state treasurer who honestly wants to do the job of state treasurer.”

“Tom’s opponents are running so they can get the next job. One is not willing to pledge to complete even one term as state treasurer and the other is quitting in mid-term of his first elected office as a State Senator,” noted Ross.

Ross continued, “Over the last ten years we have had four state treasurers. It’s time for some stability in the office. We need someone who is honestly willing to stick to it and do the job. Tom Nesbitt is that man. Tom Nesbitt has said, ‘I just want to do the job of being state treasurer and pledge to serve two terms if elected.’ ”

Ross observed that it was noted in an Omaha World Herald article (Monday, January 25, 2010) that Don Stenberg said he would not take a pledge to serve out the entire four years as state treasurer if he is elected. The article quoted Stenburg as saying, “The only promise I’m making is if I’m elected state treasurer, I will do the job to the best of my ability for whatever time I hold the office.”

Ross went on to note that Tony Fulton said in a letter to his supporters, “The pay this job provides entered into our decision. . . the Treasurer earns $85,000 per year, so in all candor, the pay raise is something my family and I have taken into account.”

Ross also mentioned his own experience as Nebraska’s State Treasurer. “As a former state treasurer myself, I know the office provides valuable services to Nebraskans and I think we deserve a state treasurer who honestly wants to do the job. That is why I am asking voters to join me in supporting Tom Nesbitt and voting for him in May,” Ross concluded.
